
Hard-Fought Wins Lift Wolverines Past Visiting Purdue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team extended its win streak to five straight on Friday (April 17) in a 4-0 victory over Purdue at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines took the doubles point with No. 52-ranked Max Dahlin and Pierce Shaya starting their match with a break of Maj Premzi and Henrik Villanger, and another break pushed the Wolverines ahead 4-1 before the match settled at 6-2. At No. 2 doubles Bjorn Swenson and Alex Cairo were tied at 3-3 with Nour Fathalla and Stefan Simeunovic before earning a service break and consolidating it to take a 5-3 lead before a 6-4 final score.
Shaya made it 2-0 Michigan with a straight-set victory over Jacob Lee at No. 5 singles. Even at 3-3 in the first set, Shaya broke Lee and maintained serve to grab a 5-3 advantage that he rode to a 6-4 set. The second set was all Shaya, with him jumping out to a 4-1 lead on his way to a 6-2 win.
No. 6-ranked Dahlin extended his nation-leading winning streak to 15 matches to improve to 17-1 at No. 1 singles with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Fathalla, who grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first set before Dahlin battled back to win three straight. The two went serve for serve, which continued into a first-set tiebreak with Dahlin grabbing the two-point advantage at 7-5. In the second set, Dahlin and Fathalla were knotted at three apiece before Dahlin closed out on a three-game run to end the match.
Swenson earned his sixth match-clincher of the season when he put away Henrik Villanger at No. 2 singles and extended his win streak to five straight. Swenson used three service breaks to win the opening set 6-2 and had a chance to win the second set as he led 5-4 before Villanger battled back and won four consecutive games to win the set 7-5. No. 45-ranked Swenson then jumped out to a 3-0 lead and rode it to a 6-1 third-set win.
The team victory extends the Wolverines' win streak over Purdue to 23 straight.
Michigan will honor its senior class on Sunday (April 19) before the start of its match against Indiana at noon. Admission to the match at the Varsity Tennis Center is free.
