ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team delivered a record-breaking performance Friday (April 17), highlighted by two Wolverines surpassing a 29-year-old program mark at the Wake Forest Invitational, while others competed at the Big Red Classic.
Wake Forest Invitational
Trent McFarland rewrote the program record book in the 1,500 meters, clocking a personal-best 3:33.17 to eclipse the previous mark of 3:35.19 set by Marc Weiser Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Kevin Sullivan, in 1997. His time leads the NCAA this season and sits just 0.15 seconds off the collegiate record. Brendan Herger joined him in breaking the long-standing record, finishing in 3:34.06 to rank No. 8 all-time on the NCAA all-time performers list.
Three additional Wolverines recorded personal bests in the event: Riley Flemington (3:41.42), Jonathan Miles (3:41.99) and Nathan Lopez (3:44.24). Flemington's mark sits just 0.32 seconds shy of cracking the program's all-time performers list.
In the open section of the 1,500 meters, Marcus Reilly led Michigan with a personal-best 3:49.12. John O'Reilly (3:51.80) and Miles Brown (3:59.73) each made their event debuts.
Heath McAllister added a personal-best performance in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 13:57.26, while Luke Venhuizen narrowly missed his best with a 13:48.99 effort.
Big Red Classic
Josh Huisman threw a personal best 57.44m (188-5) in the hammer throw to finish 18th.
In the pole vault, Cole Sheldon cleared 4.91m (16-1.75) to place third, while Liam Kinney cleared 4.76m (15-7.25) to tie for fourth.
Michigan will wrap up competition Saturday (April 18) at the Big Red Classic, beginning at 11 a.m. CT with the discus throw.
