NORTH PLAINS, Ore. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team moved up one spot on the leaderboard Saturday (May 2), carding a 283 (+3) in the second round of the Big Ten Championships and sitting seventh after 36 holes with a 571 total (288-283) at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
Michigan shaved five strokes off its opening-round score and positioned itself within striking distance of a strong finish. The Wolverines are just one shot out of the top five heading into Sunday's final round.
Sophomore Nilay Naik paced Michigan with a team-best 69 (-1). Recording four birdies through 17 holes, Naik reached four-under before running into trouble on No. 18, carding a triple bogey to finish with the Wolverines' first sub-par round of the championship. He is tied for 14th individually at 141 (72-69, +1).
Sophomore RJ Arone is just one shot back and tied for 19th at 142 (70-72), while Dean Muratore sits tied for 25th at 143 (73-70). Freshman Jordan Hwang continues to contribute in his Big Ten Championships debut, tied for 43rd at 145 (73-72).
UCLA leads the 18-team field at 550 (-10) after a second-round 269 (-11), with Washington (561) and Illinois (565) rounding out the top three. UCLA's Josh Kim holds the individual lead at 133 (-7; 67-66).
The Wolverines will look to carry their momentum into Sunday's (May 3) final round as they aim to continue their climb and secure a strong finish. Michigan will tee off at 9:30 a.m. PT paired with Rutgers and Minnesota at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course.
