ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan swimming and diving head coach Matt Bowe announced Wednesday (May 27) the promotion of Gunnar Schmidt to associate head coach.
Schmidt has been with the program since 2023 in an associate coach role and has primarily served as coach with the middle-distance group of swimmers. Schmidt has trained multiple conference and national champions including Hannah Bellard, Colin Geer, Tyler Ray and Bella Sims.
A familiar name in Ann Arbor, Schmidt returned to Michigan after building an accomplished coaching resume at both the club and national levels.
"This is a well-earned promotion for Gunnar. He has done a tremendous job with our student-athletes, particularly with the middle-distance group, helping produce an NCAA champion, multiple NCAA All-Americans and school record holders," said Bowe. "His commitment to our program and the daily development of our athletes has elevated our team in a significant way. We are grateful for his continued leadership and excited for him to step into the role of associate head coach."
Since 2016, he has served as head coach of Club Wolverine, elevating the program to national prominence and earning multiple USA Swimming Gold Medal Club recognitions. As head coach and executive director of CW, Schmidt has developed numerous national-caliber athletes.
Schmidt has had athletes on the USA Swimming National Junior Teams and U.S. National Teams, including the 2022 USA Swimming National Junior Team (Mel Zajac Tour).
In addition to his club success, Schmidt has held several roles within the Michigan program, including program assistant, volunteer coach and associate coach, contributing to the continued success of one of the nation's premier swimming and diving programs.
