Welcome to your one stop podcast for all things Michigan athletics. Updates on every team on campus and interviews with players and coaches are all on the way. This is Conqu'ring Heroes. Here's your host, John Jansen, joined now by one of the seniors of this baseball team, the ace of the team, the Friday night ace, that's Kurt Barr. And Kurt, thanks for joining me. And I gotta ask you, you spent all four years at Michigan. It almost seems like a rarity in, in these days. What's it like being a senior having played all four years at Michigan with so much going on in college sports, guys moving around and, and moving schools like it's like they're changing clothes.
Kurt Barr • 02:02
Yeah, you know, I guess it is pretty unique. I've thought about that a little bit before but like Michigan was my dream school. Like this was my destination school. So there was never any thought of leaving, you know, even if I got like cut from the team like I, I wasn't leaving Michigan. This is a pretty special spot but it's cool like obviously learning like the coaches tendencies over the years and you know I got you know our plays and ingrained in the back of my head which is cool. So you know I get to kind of show the younger guys the ropes because I have been here for so long, which is pretty cool. And I've got to build relationships with, you know, not only like, the. The coaches, but all the support staff, like the grounds. The grounds guys, and, you know, our academic staff and all that. So, you know, I wouldn't want to spend my four years of college anywhere else.
Kurt Barr • 02:47
Like I said, this was. This was my destination school.
Jon Jansen • 02:50
Looking back on these four years, we'll talk about what's to come. I know you got two weekend series that are big time for you guys against Minnesota and Ohio State. But looking back over the four years, what's the. Has it lived up to the experience that you thought you were going to have at Michigan?
Kurt Barr • 03:06
Absolutely. Yeah. I remember, like, very distinctly working out at my grandma's house, but, like, the day before I left her freshman year, and she was like, enjoy it. These are going to be the best four years of your life. And I was like, oh, like, you know, okay, grandma. And then, you know, fast forward four years. I. I finished school, like, I turned in my last essay last week, and I'm riding out baseball here. It truly has been, like, everything I could have asked for and so much more. Michigan's a pretty special place. Pretty cool resources, awesome people. The connections athletically, academically, on the real world are just phenomenal. You know, couldn't. Couldn't really ask anything more out of a university here. Close to home as well.
Jon Jansen • 03:43
And I mean, you use the term. I know it wasn't in this sense, but you said you fast forward now you're a senior. How quickly has these four years gone so quick?
Kurt Barr • 03:51
It's actually insane. Like, I'll be honest, like, I wasn't a huge fan of college. Like, my. My first semester here. Like I said, I grew up fairly close to here. I was going home, like, literally every chance I could. And the older guys were like, kurt, like, you know, stick around, like, come hang out with us. And I was like, listen, dude, like, you don't understand. Like, I need a break. Like, I need to go see my family. So that's what I did. And now I know, like, you know, I'm going to be home this summer being like, man, like, I'm not going back. Which is crazy. But, man, it really went by, like, super, super quickly.
Jon Jansen • 04:23
Your brother's a reliever on this team, Preston. He's a freshman. What's one piece of advice that you've given him? Whether it's, you know, something he's doing on campus, something with the baseball team, something with school, whatever it is? What's the one piece of advice you gave him when He. When he enrolled here.
Kurt Barr • 04:39
Yeah. I mean, the first thing just outside of baseball is just, like, immerse yourself. Like, like I said, I kind of made that mistake. My freshman. My freshman fall here didn't really immerse myself, and because of that, I wasn't really fully comfortable. But, you know, I think him having me here has helped him. Certainly his freshman year. And then baseball wise, like, the game's the same. Like, you might say, you know, I came from high school, I'm playing D one baseball now. Like, yeah, that's true. But, you know, the plate's still sixty feet away, and the rules are the same. And, you know, like, I think it's really easy, and I've seen it here, like, especially freshman pitcher, younger guys, like, the game speeds up on you. But I think he's done a really good job of staying within himself. He's the kind of guy that doesn't think either. Like, he's like, man, I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna shove it down these guys throats.
Kurt Barr • 05:24
Like, he is that type of guy, and he's done really well here so far.
Jon Jansen • 05:29
What's it like for you seeing him on the mound?
Kurt Barr • 05:31
Yeah, so at first, like, his freshman fall, I was a little nervous. Seeing him out there. I was like, man, like, I. I just want him to succeed because, you know, like, first impressions are a big deal. Like, yeah, you can get better, but, like, especially that freshman fall, like, that's really important to establish yourself. And he did that. And believe me, I had the butterflies just as much as, you know, I would have pitching when I was watching him out there. But he's established himself, and now, you know, when he's out there, you know, I. You know, I'm not as nervous anymore, but it's cool, like, seeing my brother out there.
Jon Jansen • 06:00
So sixty one appearances for you, forty three starts, and you start the season off, you're the Sunday starter. Now that you're the Friday night ace, what's this season been like for you? And what was it like when coach Tracy Smith came to you and said, hey, we want you to lead off every series?
Kurt Barr • 06:16
Yeah, it was cool. Obviously, I was, you know, satisfied with any role they gave me at the start of the season. I think it's just stacking good performances on good performances. Unfortunately, you know, our. Our preseason Big Ten pitcher of the year has been out with a, you know, a little shoulder injury. And, you know, I kind of had to fill some spots. But my sophomore year, I was, you know, Friday guy for a little While too last year ended as the same thing, so, you know, mentally it wasn't any different. But, you know, it was obviously cool to be back in that spot, you know, starting the weekend off right for the boys here. But yeah, it was cool. I think it was after a UCLA start, obviously they're number one team in the country. I did really well and, you know, I figured I was going to get the ball on Friday going forward, and I have, and it's been pretty good so far.
Jon Jansen • 07:01
Everyone always wants to know about the durability of pitchers. You're the only one in the staff that has started all eleven weekends this year. What's the, what's the key for you to create that durability?
Kurt Barr • 07:13
Yeah, I think it's just building a routine. You know, early in the season we were fortunate enough, you know, go down Washtenaw here in Ann Arbor and we were getting iv's and, you know, whatever we wanted, which was cool, like recovery wise. But it's nice to know, you know, I'm gonna start every Friday. I'm gonna throw my bullpen on Tuesday. I'm gonna lift Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and everything's fairly planned out. As a reliever, you know, you're a little bit like, man, I don't know if I'm gonna throw this midweek, maybe I shouldn't lift this hard today and whatnot. But, you know, it's just taking care of your body. I'm a very routine oriented guy. And yeah, I take my lifting seriously and the nutrition and all that sort of stuff. And, you know, everybody, you know, it's a kind of luck of the jaw thing too. You know, I, I was talking to a guy last week.
Kurt Barr • 07:56
If you were to look at everybody's, everybody's MRI's of their shoulder, like, everybody would probably have like a slight tear in their labrum or whatnot. Like, it just affects guys differently. And, you know, thankfully over the course of my four years here, I have avoided, you know, stuff like that.
Jon Jansen • 08:11
So you guys start off against who is now the, the number one team in the Big Ten? UCLA. You referenced that. And it's the, the second weekend it was Nebraska, who's now the second team in second place in the Big Ten. Since then, you guys haven't lost the series. What's been the key for you guys to continue to win these series? And there's two sweeps in there as well.
Kurt Barr • 08:33
Yeah, after our, I want to say it was Nebraska, we went to Rutgers, but I, I could be screwing up the scheduling in there, but we lost a Friday night game to Rutgers on some uncharacteristically, you know, bad plays. And we, we met that Saturday morning and Skip, our head coach was like, man, like, I know it's in here, we just gotta find it. And you know, since then he started tinkering with the lineup a little bit and we've had guys filling in roles where, you know, maybe they weren't recruited here to play. And we really found our footing as a staff. Our big tens here, our Big Ten era has got to be, you know, top three or five and we're getting the timely hits and we've come together as a team, like tremendously too. Like everybody trusts each other. It's not clicky. Like we're, we're a really tight group and we know what we can do here. Like if the season ended today, yeah, we'd probably be in a regional, but we got to take care of business these next two weeks.
Kurt Barr • 09:22
But you know, in my experience here so far, like, I haven't played, quote unquote, like meaningful games in, in May with an opportunity to extend our season and you know, be in that conversation to, you know, be a regional team and in the conversation for a national championship, I really think we got the squad to do it this year. So it's been cool to see our team kind of grow together in gel.
Jon Jansen • 09:40
So for our listeners that aren't aware, you guys currently sit fifth in the Big Ten, the top four teams get that buy. You guys are two games back. Do you guys talk about what it's going to take to earn that? You know, and to move up? Some of it's out of your control, but what you guys can't control. How much do you guys talk about?
Kurt Barr • 09:57
Yeah, I mean, moderately talk about it. You know, everybody every, you know, we're on Instagram, we're on Twitter, you know, we're seeing the importance of the top four seeds and whatnot. But at the end of the day, like, we can't control what Nebraska or SC does. Like, you know, we got to be focused on Minnesota and Ohio State. But like I said, like we've, we've been rolling. We're pretty hot. I like our chances but you know, like it, it is in our hands. We just got to go do it.
Jon Jansen • 10:23
How much carries over because the last time you guys went to Minnesota, you had a complete game. You guys wanted how much of that with how much change just on a year to year basis in college baseball, but with the portal and teams changing rosters changing, how much of the knowledge of Facing that team or the experience of being there carries over that next time.
Kurt Barr • 10:45
Yeah, it's kind of interesting. I, actually, I. I forgot about that. Yeah, my freshman year, I was at the park, and it's a beautiful park out there, man. I think every. Every start I have against, like, a Big Ten school, I'm like, okay, this is what I did. This is what I did against him last time. Like, I remember playing Michigan State this past year or, or this past month, I was like, okay, like last time at mclean, like, I went three innings and gave up seven runs. Like a man, I gotta adventure myself. Like, that does cross your mind a little bit. You know, I know I did well against Minnesota last time, but at the end of the day, like, I, I always irks me when, like, I'm watching TV and like, they pull up stats like, oh, like, the. The Tigers haven't won this since nineteen eighty four. Well, like, it's like, well, okay. But, yeah, they go by the same name, but it's a completely different roster.
Kurt Barr • 11:32
Like, I don't know. So it's the same in college athletics. Like, I'm sure it's probably two guys from the Minnesota roster who were there my freshman year or whatever, my sophomore year. So as much as, like, yeah, it's a little psychological thing. Like, it doesn't change much.
Jon Jansen • 11:46
So you. You lead the team in pitching in every meaningful category. And in the history of Michigan, there's been some really good arms. At Michigan, you're number nine in strikeouts. When you start to look at that. And I know you still got games to play and you still got. You still move up the list, but when you think of that context of the. The great arms that have pitched here and where you. Where you land amongst those arms, what are some of the thoughts that run through your head?
Kurt Barr • 12:13
It's kind of crazy. Like, I remember sitting my freshman year science class and. And back in Ontario, and I was looking at, you know, the. The academic requirements. I needed to go to Michigan because I just wanted to go to Michigan so bad. And then, like, as I started throwing harder my junior year, I was like, oh, you know, like, maybe Michigan's a possibility. But I know, like, they have, like, a top ten recruiting class and maybe I'm not going to fit in. And then I had an awesome junior year and it was, oh, man, like, Michigan's recruiting me, and I just kind of slowly climbed that ladder. And, you know, to hear you say that is. Is pretty cool. But, man, I just, like, I grew up watching guys like Trey Burke and Denard Robinson and you know, all these guys who I just like idolized as like Michigan athletes. So, you know, to hear that, you know, I'm top ten in program history is, is pretty cool because, you know, I just wanted to go to Michigan as a student initially and now I'm here, you know, doing what we're doing as a squad.
Kurt Barr • 13:09
I know it's something I'm going to look back on in forty, fifty years and be, and be really proud of.
Jon Jansen • 13:14
Yeah, well, trust me, now that I'm, you know, I'm not quite forty or fifty years, that, that, that thirty years goes quickly, as quickly it seems as the four years that you were, were in Ann Arbor. So take stock and you, you take a look at what's going on. But the last time out, all right, you, you're playing against Maryland. Five and two thirds. One run, four hits, eight strikeouts. It's at Maryland. And the game goes to ten innings.
Kurt Barr • 13:40
Yeah.
Jon Jansen • 13:40
And the top of the tenth, you guys get a home run from Park to win the game. What's that like knowing that, hey, a half a game ago I was pitching and it's one one going into the tenth. What, what's going through your mind? Because obviously everybody wants to win, but it's an unbelievable game.
Kurt Barr • 13:59
Yeah. I mean Friday night games are along those lines usually like, it's usually a pitcher's duel. And that dude from Rutgers actually had eighteen appearances but zero starts going in the year. And he, he carved us for a little bit there, so props to him. But Gavin came in after me and shut it down for four and a third, I think it was. And June Song, as you mentioned, hit the game, game winning homer and he's been on like this like insanely weird tear over the last two weeks. I haven't seen anything like it. Four game winning hits, a couple walk offs. Like coming from a guy who hadn't had an at bat in mid March and or late March. He's an awesome guy. He's such a glue guy, so wouldn't want it to come from anyone else. But we were, we were sitting there in the tenth like, dude, like June's on deck. Like, no way this is going to happen again. And of course he did it again.
Kurt Barr • 14:47
So. But awesome feeling like we needed that Friday night when it propelled us to sweep there this week past weekend.
Jon Jansen • 14:53
So whether it's been Joonsung or Colby Turner, I know he's been on a tear all season long. Are you guys, do you feel like you are playing your best baseball at the most important time?
Kurt Barr • 15:03
Yeah, absolutely. I think we are peaking at the right time. We finally got our staff to a point where, you know, we know the Friday, Saturday, Sunday starter and, you know, guys kind of have their roles coming out of the pen. Our lineup is kind of set, like you know, every week we can expect, you know, the same, however many or so guys to be out there. We switch up the DH here and there, but, you know, guys are kind of settling into their roles. And like I said, like, everybody's super fired up to be playing those, you know, high leverage, meaningful games in, in May. And I think that's helped a lot too, knowing that, like, man, we are right there. We just want to go grab it.
Jon Jansen • 15:38
I always try and find the right way to ask this question because no losses are ever good. No one ever wants and say, oh, well, hey, that was a good loss, but you can learn things from it. And we talked about those first two series of the year against UCLA and Nebraska. What lessons did you guys learn in those matchups that maybe have helped you through the last eleven series that you guys have won?
Kurt Barr • 15:58
Yeah, I think the takeaway from those two series, like, man, like, we are a good team. Like, we competed well against UCLA. We lost like a nail biting two game that Saturday against UCLA, like, or, excuse me, Nebraska, that Sunday game we were going for, you know, the series win, we were tied in the eighth and ended up losing the game. But I think it just showed us that, like, we are that type of kind of team that can compete with those, you know, quote unquote, like national championship contenders because that's where we want to be, right? And you know, you talk about losses like we had a. We had a bad loss against Oakland and I don't know, it was maybe late March, and after that game, we got together as a team and kind of, you know, pinpointed the things that we were deficient in. And there was some healthy conversation there and a lot of healthy dialogue for like half an hour.
Kurt Barr • 16:45
And I think we really came together there too. So, yeah, it was those two series and I think, you know, that game against Oakland and that game against Rutgers, that kind of propelled us to where we are now as a team.
Jon Jansen • 16:54
Now, one of the things I failed to mention at the beginning, you're also a captain and you mentioned getting together after some of these losses. What, is there extra pressure on you because you're the Friday night ace, you're a captain, and how do you. How do you manage everything that's going on, you know, in class, trying to graduate, trying to take care of all the responsibilities that are tough if you're, even if you're just only a student, you throw on top of that responsibilities that you have this year. How have you been able to manage all that?
Kurt Barr • 17:23
Yeah, I mean, I feel like I'm a like type A kind of guy. You know, my. I've. I'm the oldest sibling as well, so I wouldn't say I'm like, you know, taking care of like my younger siblings, but, you know, managing them is kind of something that I probably inherently grew up with. So, you know, like, obviously I take a lot of pride in being a team captain here and you know, school like, you know, I try to stay on top of and being that Friday night guy. Like, I want to, you know, set an example for the team and. But it's been easy. Like the coaches have made it easy. You know, the coaches have made it easy and the guys are awesome. Like, everybody gels well together. Co captain, like Elie Kligman is an awesome guy and we got just a ton of opportunity upperclassmen who are super serious about, you know, getting this team to where we want to be. And that's made it easy too.
Kurt Barr • 18:09
Like I haven't done it all by myself. So, like it's been an awesome experience. You know, last year and this year
Jon Jansen • 18:15
for sure, you took us through a little bit of your routine being a Friday starter. You mentioned the bullpen on Tuesday, working out on. Was it Wednesday or Thursday? Take us through the routine. You wake up in Minneapolis on, you know, Friday morning. What does game day look like for you?
Kurt Barr • 18:30
Yeah, I prefer the earlier games, honestly, because, like, there's less time to just sit around. And I think our game in Minneapolis this coming Friday is at seven. But yeah, usually we stay on campus. So I love waking up around, I don't know, nine. We'll have breakfast and then I'll throw my airpods in, walk around campus, you know, experience, you know, what other big ten cities are like, call my parents, call my girlfriend, try to kill time there. I'll go back, take a nap for like an hour, really, just trying to kill time any way I can. And then, you know, will of meal at, gosh, I guess on Friday it'll be three. Go to the field, sit around the field for another hour and a half before I start to warm up. It is a lot of just like trying to take your mind off baseball before you actually got to stretch an hour before the game. So these late games are. Makes it a little difficult to do that.
Kurt Barr • 19:16
But being on the Road is awesome, too, because there's a lot of things to distract yourself with that are unfamiliar, you know, outside of the hotel. So I'm sure I'll go explore Minneapolis a little bit this. This Friday.
Jon Jansen • 19:27
So exploring the. The college campus. I get it. It's. It's what I do on game days as well. And I'm curious, outside of Ann Arbor, what's been your favorite Big Ten campus to. To walk around and. And see?
Kurt Barr • 19:38
Yeah, hands down, I'd probably say Bloomington, Indiana. That place is gorgeous. We were there the last weekend of the year, my sophomore year, so right when the trees were blooming and they got, like, a little river that runs through campus and a couple, like, wooden bridges that go over. All the buildings are the same, like, beautiful brick. I really, really like that place. And there's a. There's a lot of towns that just, like, remind me of, like, what an old, like, Big Ten school should feel like. Like, Purdue and Michigan State and Iowa. Iowa City. Like, I love these, like, little towns where, like, you. You know, twenty minutes before you stroll in, it's a bunch of farmland, and then, boom, like, you're in this Big Ten city, and it's like, man, like, this is what I thought, like, Big Ten school should look like when I was, like, eight years old.
Kurt Barr • 20:25
So it's kind of cool, like, experiencing all that sort of stuff.
Jon Jansen • 20:27
All right, so before I let you go, you got the game, they got the series against Minnesota, and then you finish against Ohio State. Before I ask you about finishing the season against Ohio State, what's it going to take in these next two weekends for you guys to accomplish what you want to accomplish?
Kurt Barr • 20:43
Yeah. Our last, like, month or so, Skip has been honing in. Just execute, execute, execute. Like, we do what we're supposed to do. Like, we will be in the positions we want to be in. So if there's a guy on second and third and with less than two outs, like, we're gonna put a ball in the air to right field or on the ground to the right side. Like, me as a pitcher, Like, I'm gonna try to overwhelm the guys with strikes. Like, if we execute, we will be okay. We have the talent, we have the camaraderie. Coaching staff has trust in us. We have coaches or we have trust in the coaching staff. But, like, the word of the year has been just execute, execute, execute. Just do your job and not trying to do too much, and we'll be okay if that happens.
Jon Jansen • 21:18
So I am one hundred percent not trying to bait you into Any bulletin board material. But hey, the, the final series against Ohio State. Senior captain, what's that going to be like for you to go against the Buckeyes? Especially for a guy that. Hey, you. You already admitted it. You grew up a Michigan fan. You know all about the rivalry. What's it going to be like?
Kurt Barr • 21:40
Yeah, it's going to be special. It's going to be my last start here at Ray Fisher, too, so I'm sure it'll be a little, like, emotional going into it, but, you know, once the game starts, it's. It's go time. Have had some pretty good starts against Ohio State last couple of years. It's always an emotional series. Like, you know, they'll be rowdy. Will be rowdy. And there's going to be a lot on the line for both teams, too. I think they're the sixth or seventh seed right now in the, in the conference standings. They had a crazy turnaround this year. They're doing really well. They just swept Nebraska at home. So it'll be cool. We always look forward to the, you know, the Michigan State series, the Ohio State series, but we got to get through Minnesota first and, but it'll be, it'll. It'll be pretty special.
Jon Jansen • 22:20
Have you thought at all what Sunday will be like? Because your starts in the bag Sunday, Senior Day?
Kurt Barr • 22:25
Yeah, I, A little bit. Like, you know, the last couple of years, we've always been, you know, I've on the rail watching the seniors walking by and being like, man, like every year's a little bit closer till I'm up there. And yeah, it'll be, it'll be a little sad. But, you know, at the same time, like, I've, I've known this was coming, right? And my family will be here with my brothers, and so it'll be pretty cool. And like you said, like, I won't have, you know, a start to worry about twenty minutes later during the Senior Day ceremonies, which is, which is kind of nice. But, yeah, it'll be, It'll be kind of like my pseudo graduation because we're in. We were in Maryland last weekend for the student athlete and the. In the big house graduation. So it'll be cool.
Jon Jansen • 23:05
So your family reminds me a little bit of the Bredeson family, where, hey, you know, you had a couple of guys playing football, he had another one playing a different sport, all at Michigan. And I want to ask you this. Take yourself out of the equation, and I know age always matters in this, but Preston and your other two brothers, Deegan and Dax, who's going to end up being the best athlete out of those three.
Kurt Barr • 23:26
Man, it'd be hard if I didn't say Dax just because there's, there's a big age gap between, you know, my brother who's a senior in high school, Deegan, and, and Dax, he's, he's nine. So my dad's really taking him under his wing. He's gonna be like the next prodigy. Like, we put a batting cage in our basement and he's homeschooled. So, like, all my dad does is just rip baseball with him. And he loves it too, which is awesome. But he's already a big kid. You know, we can kind of project he's going to be in that, you know, six one to six four range like me and my brothers are. And he's just got a, he's got a lefty swing. My dad put him as a lefty and he throws really hard already. So I would be lying if I said it probably it wasn't going to be Dax.
Jon Jansen • 24:13
All right, well, after senior day and you take the, the ball player cap off, whatever happens to Big Ten tournament, NCAA tournament, we're going to turn you into the number one recruiter to make sure that if, if that's the path he's taken, he ends up here.
Kurt Barr • 24:28
Yeah. Oh, you know, he's, he's already like planning it. Like, it's just a given that he's going to be like a Michigan baseball player because he sees his brothers do it. Like, he, he was here our last home series, and after the game, he took a picture out on the rail and he was like, dad, like, that's going to be me in ten years. So. Yeah, I mean, obviously, like me, if he could go anywhere to play baseball, I know it's ten years down the line, so we're wishful thinking, but it would be Michigan.
Jon Jansen • 24:50
Hey, Kurt, thanks for, for joining me, sharing some stories and best of luck in Minneapolis and obviously kick the crap out of the Buckeyes.
