CARY, N.C. -- University of Michigan baseball head coach Tracy Smith was selected as an assistant coach for the Stars team at the 2026 Collegiate National Team Training Camp, it was announced Thursday afternoon (June 11).
Smith will help coach the U.S. as it prepares for the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship in Taiwan in July.
Smith wrapped up his fourth season at the helm of the Wolverines, going 34-24 in 2026 to run his career record in Ann Arbor to 127-103. He has helped 18 Wolverines earn All-Big Ten honors, including a pitcher of the year in 2023 and back-to-back All-Big Ten second basemen in 2025 and 2026. Smith has seen two players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, including Mitch Voit last year.
Before coming to Ann Arbor, Smith had 25 years of head coaching experience, including earning National Coach of the Year honors at Indiana in 2013. Over his 29 years, Smith has racked up 932 wins, placing him 129th all-time in the NCAA and 24th among active coaches.
Illinois head coach Dan Haetleb will lead the Team USA coaching staff and is joined by Arkansas pitching coach Matt Hobbs, Bethune-Cookman head coach Jonathan Hernandez and Wake Forest head coach Tom Walter.
Smith's duties begin with a slate of exhibition games as part of the annual Stars and Stripes series starting on June 27 and running through July 4 in North Carolina and Virginia. Following the training camp and exhibition games featuring 56 of the top non-draft eligible players, he will join the rest of the Stars staff at the Inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championships in Taichung City, Taiwan, from July 11-15. The tournament, also featuring South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan, will kick off with six games of pool play before semifinals and finals take place.
