VanderKaay Named to Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026

DETROIT, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan men's swimmer Peter VanderKaay (2002-03, 2005-06) has been named to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026, it was announced on Thursday (July 30). He will be inducted alongside eight other honorees during ceremonies on Thursday, Dec. 17, at the Sound Board Theater inside MotorCity Casino Hotel.
Joining VanderKaay in the Class of 2026 are Kevin Glover (Detroit Lions), Swin Cash (Detroit Shock), Mark Ingram II (New Orleans Saints), Tony Annese (Ferris State football head coach), Paul Woods (Detroit Red Wings), Bill Lajoie (Detroit Tigers scout), Doug Drenth (Charlevoix High School), and Mark Fidrych (Detroit Tigers).
With 58 Wolverines already enshrined in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, VanderKaay becomes the fourth individual with ties to the U-M men's swimming and diving program to earn the honor.
One of the most decorated swimmers in U-M history, VanderKaay compiled a résumé that includes two Olympic gold medals, four total Olympic medals, three World Championship titles, five NCAA championships and 14 Big Ten championships.
During his collegiate career, the three-time Big Ten Swimmer of the Year captured NCAA titles in the 400-yard freestyle (2004), 500 free (2005, 2006), 1,650 free (2004), and as a member of the 800 freestyle relay (2004) earned All-America honors in each of his four seasons. He also dominated the Big Ten Championships, winning 14 conference titles across events ranging from the 200 to 1,650 freestyle, including four consecutive conference crowns in the 500 free.
A three-time Olympian, VanderKaay won Olympic gold medals as part of the United States' 800 freestyle relay teams at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games. He also earned bronze medals in the 200 freestyle at the 2008 Olympics and the 400 freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics. VanderKaay became just the second American-born male swimmer to compete in three Olympic Games and served as a Team USA co-captain at the 2012 Olympics.
VanderKaay's career later earned him a spot in the Michigan Athletics Hall of Honor Class of 2023.
