
Fife’s Last-Second Equalizer Secures Draw at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Utah State on Sunday night (Aug. 16) at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. Ellie Fife scored the equalizer in the final seconds of the match, while junior Ella Jablinskey netted the Wolverines' first goal of the night.
With 10 seconds remaining and Michigan (0-0-2) trailing 2-1, Campbell Jewell worked the ball toward the left corner of the field before finding Fife. Fife fired a bouncing shot past the Utah State (0-1-1) goalkeeper as time expired, completing the Wolverines' comeback and leveling the match at 2-2.
The Maize and Blue generated an early attacking opportunity in the first half when Jablinskey dribbled down the pitch before her shot was deflected by a Utah State defender, earning the Wolverines their first corner kick of the night.
Utah State built its advantage with a pair of first-half goals. The Aggies opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finding the top-right corner of the net at the 18:48 mark. USU doubled its lead in the 32nd minute when another strike found the bottom-left corner at 31:11, sending Michigan into halftime trailing 2-0.
Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Michigan cut the deficit in half in the 68th minute when Jablinskey ripped a shot into the top-left corner of the net, tallying her first goal of the season and putting the Wolverines on the board. U-M continued to apply offensive pressure before Fife delivered the equalizer in the closing seconds.
The Wolverines finished the contest with four shots on goal. Malia Zillman faced 16 total Utah State shots, nine of which were on goal, and finished the evening with seven saves.
Michigan opens the home portion of its 2026 schedule against Xavier on Saturday (Aug. 22) at 5 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will also serve as Heritage Day and will be streamed on B1G+.
