Agents
The University of Michigan is committed to maintaining an atmosphere of compliance as it relates to student-athlete/agent interactions. The Michigan Compliance Services Office is also dedicated to fostering a collaborative relationship between our institution, student-athletes, families, and agents to ensure Michigan student-athletes maintain their amateur status, while still providing them with critical information they will need to pursue their professional endeavors.
Accordingly, we require any individual who serves as an agent, runner, financial planner, sports marketing representative, sports public relations firm, brand manager, or an employee of any of those described to notify the Compliance Services Office (compliance@umich.edu) prior to contacting a Michigan student-athlete with remaining eligibility, or his/her family. Contact includes any communication via text, social media, phone, mail, etc., as well as face-to-face interactions. For instances where a student-athlete or a family member requests information from, or to speak to an agent prior to exhausting eligibility, the agent/advisor must contact our office before responding to the student-athlete or family member.
Additionally, it is the expectation of Michigan Athletics that all agents/advisors will:
- Familiarize themselves with NCAA rules regarding amateurism and agents,
- Abide by NCAA, Big Ten, and University of Michigan rules and procedures regarding agents,
- Maintain agent certifications for relevant sport organizations (e.g. NFLPA, MLBPA, etc.), and
- Act in the best interest of our student-athletes at all times.
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance with this policy. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Heinrich
