Volunteer Coaches
These responsibilities are permissible for volunteer coaches:
- Engage in any on-court or on-field coaching activities with student-athletes.
- Assist the coaching staff with administrative duties.
- Be involved with community service activities with your team.
- Coordinate pre or postgame meals.
- Arrange team travel.
- Evaluate/analyze film of your team or opponents on-campus.
- Evaluate/analyze videotape of prospects on-campus.
- Receive up to two (2) complimentary tickets to home athletics contests in the coach's sport.
- Purchase additional game tickets in their sport at face value.
- Receive entertainment in conjunction with entertainment provided to student-athletes.
- Receive complimentary admission to home athletics events in conjunction with prospects' official or unofficial visits. You must have assigned duties at the game.
- Receive complimentary meals incidental to organized team activities (e.g., pre- or post-game meals, occasional meals, organized full team member meals) or meals in conjunction with official or unofficial visits.
- Receive apparel that is incidental to coaching (e.g., shoes, shirts and/or jackets).
- Receive the same awards as student-athletes for participation in championship events.
- Receive parking expenses associated with practice and/or competition.
- Travel with the team and be reimbursed for necessary and actual expenses incurred while traveling with the team (i.e., meals, lodging).
- Receive phone calls from prospects of any age in sports other than lacrosse and softball. For lacrosse and softball, may not receive phone calls from prospects before September 1 of prospect's junior year in high school.
- Place phone calls to prospects (or the prospect's parents or legal guardians) following: the prospect signing an NLI or our institution receiving a financial deposit in response to an offer of admission.
- Place or receive phone calls from prospects (or the prospect's parents or legal guardians) during the five days immediately preceding and during a prospect's official visit, the day preceding and during a prospect's unofficial visit, and when dealing with camp/clinic logistical issues - provided no recruiting conversations or solicitations to attend the camp/clinic occur.
- E-mail, send Twitter and Facebook direct messages, send recruiting materials, text message, instant message (e.g. G-chat, Facebook chat), and text message through phone apps (.e.g SnapChat, Kik, WhatsApp) to prospects (or the prospect's parents or legal guardians) beginning September 1 of prospect's junior year in high school (EXCEPTION: in ice hockey, beginning January 1 of prospect's sophomore year; in swimming and diving, following July 1 of prospect's junior year).
- Become friends or follow prospects of any age on social media.
- "Like" or "Favorite" a prospect's social media post.
- Retweet or repost a prospect's social media content.
- Have contact with prospects on-campus or within one mile of campus boundaries during unofficial visits, and contact with prospects on official visits on-campus or within 30-miles of campus.
- Use an institutional vehicle for transporting prospective student-athletes to/from the bus or train station or nearest major airport for an official visit and/or the prospect's initial arrival at the institution to attend classes or orientation.
- Provide on-campus transportation to a prospect during a prospect's unofficial or official visit.
- Assist the coaching staff with on-campus recruiting activities (e.g., touring facilities).
- Attend or speak at banquets and meetings designed primarily to recognize prospects, provided the presentation meets NCAA legislation.
- Receive camp compensation from both the Athletic Department and a source other than the Athletic Department, provided all outside camp employment is pre-approved by the Compliance Services Office and the camp is operated in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.
- Be employed and receive compensation for working outside of U-M or with U-M in a department outside Athletics.
- Be employed by a local sports club provided that all prospect-aged individuals reside within 50 miles of Michigan's campus.
These responsibilities are NOT permissible for volunteer coaches:
- Receive expenses for non-competition related travel, such as for conventions or professional development.
- Place phone calls to prospects (or the prospect's parents or legal guardians) prior to: the prospect signing an NLI or our institution receiving a financial deposit in response to an offer of admission except for above exception.
- Evaluate prospects on or off-campus, or travel with a coach who is recruiting, even if the volunteer incurs the costs.
- Attend any on- or off-campus athletics events (e.g., high school contest, evaluation camp) in their sport in which prospects participate, unless: an immediate family member is involved in the activity, their attendance is not for evaluation purposes, and they do not have any direct contact with any prospect, prospect's parent and/or coach, other than their immediate family member.
- Have any off-campus contact or face-to-face interaction with prospects (or the prospect's parents, legal guardians or coaches).
- Provide prospects or student-athletes any extra benefits, such as lodging, meals and/or transportation.
- Provide lessons to prospects, unless under a permissible NCAA tryout exception.
- Participate with or observe student-athletes in their sport who are engaged in voluntary athletically related activities (e.g., pick-up games).
- Scout future opponent's off-campus, even if the volunteer coach pays the related costs.
- Coach or be involved in the same sport at a high school.
- Receive compensation or remuneration from the Athletic Department.
- Receive cash bonuses, stipends or gifts related to their volunteer coaching position from the Athletic Department, the head coach or any outside groups, including booster clubs.
