James Plocki has been part of the University of Michigan Strength and Conditioning staff for the past 26 years.
His career at Michigan started as a graduate assistant strength coach on Bo Schembechler's football staff. After his graduate assistantship, Plocki was promoted to the title of coordinator of strength and conditioning. Under this title, he became the assistant strength coach for football and the coordinator of strength and conditioning for all other sports at Michigan. During this time, the Michigan Athletic Department won national championships in basketball, swimming, football, field hockey and softball and two national championships in ice hockey. He has coached numerous individual national champions as well All-America, All-Big Ten, All-Academic, Olympian, Heisman Trophy, Hobey Baker Trophy, NFL, NHL and NBA athletes. Plocki has been a part of many Big Ten, CCHA, Bowl, NIT, Final Four, Frozen Four, Super Six and College Softball World Series teams.
During his time at Michigan, Plocki has had the opportunity to personally work with every sports team. In 2001, Plocki was awarded an Honorary M from the Michigan Athletic Department for his dedicated service to Michigan Athletics.
Prior to joining the Michigan Staff, Plocki was a paid part-time strength coach on Joe Paterno's football staff. During his tenure at Penn State, the football team won a national championship and attended four bowl games. He was a dean's list recipient and named one of the 1988 Outstanding College Students while attending Penn State. Plocki occupied his free time during this period as a Class IV-V Whitewater Raft Guide.
Plocki is a native of Natrona Heights, Pa., and now resides in Saline, Mich., with his wife, Bev, who is the head coach of the Michigan women's gymnastics team. The couple has a daughter, Elizabeth, and son, Tyler.
