Michigan at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics
Five individuals with University of Michigan ties represented the United States at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, with former Wolverine Jack Johnson (ice hockey) joining four current U-M students -- ice dancing pairs Meryl Davis and Charlie White as well as Evan Bates and Emily Samuelson -- on the world stage in their first Olympic experiences. Johnson, Davis and White each earned a silver medal.
Johnson and Team USA dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Canada in the gold-medal game after a perfect 3-0-0-0 mark in group play followed by wins over Switzerland and Finland. In six games Johnson had one assist and a +2 plus/minus rating. A defenseman for the U-M ice hockey team in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, Johnson is the first former Wolverine to receive an Olympic ice hockey medal since 1994 and the first American since 1956.
Boosted by career highs in original dance (67.08) and free dance (107.19), Davis and White finished with a 215.74 point total to place second behind Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (221.57). Davis and White won their second straight title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January to secure their trip to Vancouver.
U-M sophomores Samuelson and Bates beat their career best in the free dance by eight points, scoring 88.94 to maintain their standing and finish in 11th place. The pair took the bronze medal at the U.S. Championships to state their case for an Olympics berth.
Mike Komisarek, who played ice hockey at U-M in 2000-01 and 2001-02, also was named to the U.S. Olympic team on Jan. 1, but on Jan. 2, while playing for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, he suffered a shoulder injury that led to season-ending surgery.
