During his collegiate career at Notre Dame, Ust racked up accolades at a prolific pace. As a freshman, Ust hit .372 with 54 RBI while earning Big East Conference Rookie of the Year and all-conference accolades at second base, the only freshman picked for all-conference honors. Baseball America named him to its All-Freshman team.
Ust was even better as a sophomore, hitting .373 with 18 home runs en route to Big East Player of the Year honors, beating out the likes of ERA leader Aaron Heilman and Pitcher of the Year Brad Lidge. Ust was all-conference at third base and was named third-team All-American by Baseball America.
As a junior, Ust hit .359 with 17 home runs and was all-conference, this time at shortstop. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 1999 amateur draft. Ust spent nine seasons in professional baseball with the Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations.
Ust also brings international experience to Michigan as a member of the USA Baseball (1998, 2005) and the Great Britain National Teams (2007-08). Ust hit .378 while slugging .555 for Team USA in 1998 and also posted a .333 average in the 1998 Baseball World Cup. Ust was honored by his homeland as the British Olympic Association Baseball Athlete of the Year in 2007.
