In the Words of the McGrone Family (Lynn and David Redd) …
Our family would like the staff, students / student-athletes, alumni, and fans of the University of Michigan to know that the athlete you’ll watch on Saturdays may seem a little different than the young man you’ll see on campus every other day of the week.
On the field, Cameron attacks each play with vigor. He’s been described as a beast, a monster, and a nightmare. Coach Brown told our family that he wants to mold Cameron into a "dude" on the Wolverines’ defense. We’re 100% sure that Cameron will become a dude as he learns from the coaches and other linebackers on the team. We know that Cameron will develop meaningful relationships because he is a team player that relishes in the camaraderie and brotherhood he develops with his teammates and coaches. If given a leadership role, Cameron will hold himself accountable for the work ethic and morale of the group. If he’s ever unable to play, he won’t hang his head low; he will be front-and-center, rooting for and encouraging the team.
Off the field, Cameron is thoughtful, compassionate, and kind. His relationship with his little brother is the best example we could think of to describe Cameron’s character and demeanor when he’s not playing football. Aaron, our 8-year old son, is on the Autism Spectrum. Until recently, Aaron did not attend Cameron’s sporting events due to the anxiety many kids on the spectrum experience when they’re over-stimulated by large crowds and loud noises. Although Cameron was disappointed, he understood Aaron’s situation and made it a priority to help us help him overcome his fear and anxiety. He allowed his little brother to tag along with him and his friends to smaller sporting events where he would introduce him to buzzer sounds, starting pistol bangs, and loud music, which ultimately prepared him to join our entire family in the stadium at Lawrence Central High School during Cameron’s senior season. We couldn’t have done it without Cameron’s help!
The University of Michigan will be home to a great young man for the next several years. Our family is so excited to see what the future holds for Cameron! Thank you to all the staff that played a part in recruiting Cameron and extending a wonderful opportunity to be coached by some of the best in the business and pursue a college degree at one of the best universities in the nation!
In the Words of his coach...
• "[He does] things right off the field," Peebles said. "[He doesn’t] get in trouble at school. [His] grades are great, a 3.8 or 3.9 (for McGrone). [He does] things right everywhere, which gave [him] opportunities to go anywhere." - High School Head Coach William Peebles
