- Title:
- Robert McCollum Family Quarterbacks Coach
Kirk Campbell is in his third season with the University of Michigan Football program in 2024 and his first season as both Sanford Robertson Offensive Coordinator and Robert McCollum Family Quarterbacks Coach. Previously, Campbell spent one season as quarterbacks coach (2023) and one season as an offensive analyst (2022).
Working with J.J. McCarthy in 2023, Campbell helped the Wolverine quarterback set single-season program records in completion percentage (72.3) and interception percentage (1.20) with 22 touchdown passes. The offense scored 35.9 points per game (14th) and three pass-catchers cleared 45 receptions and 600 yards on the way to the Big Ten Championship and a National Title. McCarthy also posted the No. 2 single-season pass efficiency mark (167.4) while finishing nine yards shy (2,991 pass yards) of becoming the school's fourth-ever 3,000-yard passer. He was named Bo Schembechler MVP, received first-team All-Big Ten recognition, and became U-M's first quarterback to earn Griese-Brees Big Ten Quarterback of the Year honors.
Campbell joined the Michigan staff after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Old Dominion University.
In 2021, Campbell helped the Monarchs average 28.5 points per game and 385.4 yards per contest. ODU finished the regular season by winning its final five games, and the offense averaged 36 points per game during that stretch. Old Dominion averaged 12 more points and 112 more offensive yards per game after Campbell's arrival.
Before his time at Old Dominion, Campbell was an offensive analyst at Penn State for three seasons (2017-19). He worked with the quarterbacks, scouted future opponents, and helped with game planning. During that three-year stretch, the Nittany Lions averaged 36.8 points per game and all three seasons ranked among the 10 best in points and yards in Penn State history.
Campbell helped the Nittany Lions win 31 games during that stretch and participate in two New Year's Six bowl games. He served as Penn State's interim QB coach in the team's 2019 Goodyear Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis, his final game with the program.
He was the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Alderson Broaddus (West Vorgomoa) for five seasons (2012-16), during which the offense averaged 34.7 points per game. In 2016, the university's fourth season of football, he helped lead the startup program to a 9-2 record and won the GMAC Championship. Alderson Broaddus produced three All-Americans and 13 all-conference performers that same season. Campbell spent five months as the Alderson Broaddus head football coach before making the move to Penn State prior to the 2017 season.
Campbell was the wide receivers and tight ends coach at Tiffin University (Ohio) in 2011. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant coaching the wide receivers and tight ends at West Virginia Wesleyan during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Campbell earned his bachelor's degree in communications from Mercyhurst University in 2008. He received his master's degree in business administration and management from Tiffin University in 2012. Campbell is originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., and attended West Allegheny High School.
