Tony Tuioti arrives in Ann Arbor as Michigan's director of player personnel after spending the past two seasons as the defensive quality control coach for the Cleveland Browns (2014-15).
Tuioti (pronounced TOO-ee-oh-TEE) worked with the defensive line during his stint in Cleveland. The Browns' 2014 defense ranked fourth in the NFL in takeaways and ninth in points allowed. That same defense led the league in completion percentage, opposing quarterback passer rating and passes defended.
Prior to joining the Browns, Tuioti spent six seasons at the University of Hawaii. He was the team's linebackers coach (2012-13), defensive tackles coach (2010-11) and director of player personnel (2008-09). He helped the Rainbow Warriors 2010 squad lead the nation in takeaways (38) and his defensive tackles tallied 22.5 of the team's 30 sacks. Off the playing field, Tuioti was the lead recruiter for Hawaii.
Tuioti was the defensive coordinator at Silverado High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he helped lead the team to the Southeast Division championship with a 10-1 record during the 2007 season. Tuioti was head coach at Kalaheo High School on Oahu in Hawaii from 2003-05. He led the Mustangs to the OIA playoffs for the first time in 10 years and was the youngest varsity head coach in the state.
A four-year letterman at Hawaii, Tuioti was an All-Western Athletic Conference defensive lineman. He is one of two former Rainbow Warriors to win a WAC championship as both a player and coach.
Tuioti earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Hawaii in 2000. He was a graduate assistant coach during the 2000 and 2001 seasons while earning a master's degree in educational administration (2002). Tuioti also completed work on a second master's degree in special education from UNLV in 2007.
Tuioti and his wife, Keala, have seven children: Teisa, Teivis, Teilor, Teitum, Teimana, Teiyana and Teinia.
