Coach Brian Smith on J'Marick Woods
"J'Marick is another big defensive back, one of several for us in this group. He has a lot of potential with a huge upside. He has good foot speed, and he's a hitter -- he'll come up and hit you. That's why they call him 'Woods.' He will come up and bring the wood.
"He is a good kid. He comes from a good family down south with humble roots. J'Marick has a chance to come in and compete for playing time right away."
In the Words of the Woods Family
"Weighing in at a whopping nine pounds, four ounces and 24 inches long, I knew the day that J'Marick La Tahj Woods was born, that he was going to be special! J'Marick was a very quiet and reserved child growing up, who loved to explore and read all the time. He was adventurous with a very vivid imagination. I can recall stopping in on his Pre-K classroom one day to find him in a corner, off to himself reading. Well, my first thought was, 'Why does my child always insist on being by himself and shy away from the other kids?' As I watched the other children that were playing and having fun, I asked his teacher what I could do to make him interact more. Her response was priceless. She said 'Mrs. Woods, J'Marick has and does interact with the other kids, but he told me that he wanted to finish reading his book before he left for the day.' She went on to tell me that J'Marick is a true leader, and it shows. He had set a goal and wanted to reach that goal. That was the first time as a mother that I can truly say that I saw J'Marick exemplify leadership. And I knew from that day forward that he would be a great leader!
"J'Marick grew up playing football, basketball, baseball and track. He loves sports, his favorite, of course, being football! He continues to excel in academics, athletics, leadership and community involvement and service. Ever since he was a child we have always instilled in him the importance of hard work, making good grades and being a true leader. J'Marick displays each of these roles on and off of the field. Being a senior defensive back team captain, an inductee into his high school's chapter of the National Honor Society, numerous academic excellence awards, helping the community with the local youth football camps and feeding the cancer survivors are just a few examples. He is a hard worker who takes his responsibilities very seriously, who understands the accountability of his actions and is a very honest and trustworthy person.
1 Corinthians 13:11 King James Version (KJV)
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
"This is one of J'Marick's favorite bible verses. I have watched my child grow from a cute little boy to a handsome young man. J'Marick's personal relationship with God is what keeps him humble. It took a huge leap of faith for a 17 year old from a little city down south, in Florence, Alabama, to make such a big decision to move to up north to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to attend college and play football. But with a lot of prayer, he did it.
"One of my favorite quotes from J'Marick is from one of his local newspaper interviews, when the writer asked him where he sees himself in the future in which, J'Marick replied, 'I am kind of nervous for what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.' With that being said, at the University of Michigan, I see J'Marick's future being very bright and fulfilling."
