• Son of current U-M Director of Player Personnel Jay Smith, who still holds the State of Michigan high school scoring record (2,841 points at Mio-Au Sable HS). The elder Smith served as an assistant coach at Michigan (1989-96) where he helped the Wolverines to the 1989 national title and recruited the Fab Five. After U-M, Smith spent nine seasons (1997-2006) as the head coach at Central Michigan, taking the Chippewa's to the 2003 NCAA second round led by MAC Player of the Year Chris Kaman
