Pronunciation: Last name: "mis-cuh-deen"
In April of 2024, Akeem Miskdeen joined the University of Michigan basketball program as an assistant coach, reuniting with U-M coach Dusty May. Miskdeen and May had previously worked together at Florida Atlantic University for three years between 2018 and 2021.
Miskdeen has nearly two decades of coaching experience and is known for his player development as well as his successes on the court. He has captured two regular-season titles, and three conference tournament championships, and has led his team to seven postseason trips, including four to the NCAA Tournament (3 Division I, 1 Division II) during his 17 seasons on the sidelines.

In his first year at Michigan, Miskdeen helped U-M more than triple its win total from the previous season. The Wolverines posted a 27-10 overall record and finished tied for second in the Big Ten with a 14-6 record, earning the three seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
After a dominant 86-68 win over Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, U-M defeated Maryland on a last second coast-to-coast layup from Tre Donaldson, sending Michigan to the championship game. Michigan came away with the Big Ten Tournament title after a gritty 59-53 win over Maryland, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
Michigan was selected as the No. 5 seed in the south region and earned a narrow 68-65 victory over UC San Diego in the first round. Michigan advanced to its sixth Sweet 16 in its last six tournament appearances after defeating No. 4 Texas A&M, 91-79, in the second round. Michigan ultimately fell to No. 1 seed Auburn in the Sweet 16.

Miskdeen worked as an assistant coach under Mike White for three seasons at Florida (2021-22) and then at Georgia (2022-24) before joining the Maize and Blue. After the Gators finished with a record of 20-14 and reached the second round of the NIT, Miskdeen followed White to Georgia.
In his first season as an assistant coach at Georgia, the Bulldogs posted a 16-16 record. Miskdeen played a crucial role in helping the Bulldogs achieve their first 20-plus win season in eight years. Anchored by the No. 14 recruiting class, the 2023-24 campaign ended with a trip to the Final Four of the NIT, with the Bulldogs finishing the season at 20-17 while Silas Demary, Jr. was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team.

For three seasons, Miskdeen was an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic under May, one of three former assistants who worked under White at Florida who are now Division I head coaches. Miskdeen helped lead the Owls to a combined 47-41 record and three consecutive winning records, a feat FAU had accomplished just once before in program history (s1989-92).
In 2019, the Owls reached the CIT, their first postseason appearance in eight years, and senior guard Anthony Adger earned All-Conference USA honors after he increased his scoring output by +9.7 points per game from the previous season with 15.5 per game. Miskdeen also served as acting head coach for two games during the 2020-21 season while May was sidelined due to health and safety protocols.

Before his time in Boca Raton, Miskdeen was part of three straight NCAA Tournament bids while coaching at Hampton (2015 and 2016) and Kent State (2017).
Spending two seasons at Kent State (2016-18), the Golden Flashes recorded 39 wins and captured the 2017 MAC Tournament championship as the sixth seed to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. With the Golden Flashes, Miskdeen played a vital role in the breakout campaign of Jaylin Walker, who more than doubled his scoring average to 15.8 points per game and posted a 30-point performance in the 2017 MAC title game to earn MVP honors. The following year, Miskdeen worked extensively with Jalen Avery, who led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Before heading to Kent State, Miskdeen spent five seasons (2011-16) on the staff at Hampton, serving as an assistant coach in his first two seasons before being promoted to associate head coach for the final three. Recording 98 wins throughout his career with the Pirates, he helped them capture the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) regular-season title (13-3), win back-to-back MEAC Tournament titles, which earned two straight trips to the NCAA Tournament (2015 & 2016). The regular-season title was Hampton’s first since the 2001-02 season.
In the 2015 NCAA postseason, Hampton defeated Manhattan in the First Four to record the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament win. The Pirates advanced to face eventual Midwest regional champion Kentucky.
As the Pirates’ recruiting coordinator, Miskdeen played a key role in recruiting 2016 All-MEAC first-team guards Quinton Chievous and Reginald Johnson Jr. from his hometown of Chicago. In 2016, both ranked among the top four in the conference in scoring, while Chievous was one of only a handful of players nationally to average a double-double (17.0 ppg and 10.7 rpg). Johnson went on to earn the 2016 MEAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, averaging 19.3 points and 8.3 assists, while tying the tournament record with 13 assists in the quarterfinal against Morgan State.
Miskdeen was a key component of the Pirates’ run through the MEAC and NCAA Tournaments in 2015. He guided Deron Powers to All-MEAC third-team honors as well as the MEAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player accolade. In 2013, Powers was named MEAC Rookie of the Year and earned five MEAC Rookie of the Week certificates.
Coaching with the Pirates marked the second stint at Hampton for Miskdeen. Following his collegiate playing career, he began his coaching career as Director of Basketball Operations with Hampton in 2008-09. In that capacity, he oversaw on-campus recruiting, monitored study hall, coordinated team travel and assisted the rest of the coaching staff in their day-to-day activities.
After a year with the Pirates, Hampton after one-year stops at Division II Mount Olive College (N.C.) and Division II Wingate University (N.C.). During the 2009-10 season, he helped Mount Olive to a 25-6 overall record, as well as Conference Carolinas regular-season and tournament titles and earned a No. 25 national ranking while advancing to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Joining Wingate in 2010 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, he helped guide them to a 19-10 record and oversaw the development of Odell Turner, an All-Conference first-team selection, as well as Jaime Vaughn, who earned second-team honors.
