Amy Mulligan enters her 15th year as the director of operations alongside J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Women's Basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico for the University of Michigan women's basketball team in 2026-27. Mulligan has been part of KBA's staff since getting the job in 2012.Â
Mulligan entered the operations field after spending almost 10 seasons spearheading the media relations efforts of several women's basketball programs. At Michigan, she is responsible for planning the Wolverines' travel, budget and scheduling, among many other administrative duties. She has been part nine NCAA Tournament teams, advancing to the Elite Eight twice (2022, 2026) and the Sweet 16 in 2021. Mulligan was a member of the staff that helped the Wolverines capture the 2017 WNIT championship and has been integral to Michigan's rise over the last decade and a half. Mulligan works alongside Michigan's external teams in promoting and marketing the Michigan women's basketball program, with U-M setting a new average attendance mark at Crisler in 2025-26 at 4,772.
Prior to joining the staff at U-M, Mulligan served an assistant athletics media relations director at Virginia since October 2007. As the primary media relations contact for the Cavalier women's basketball and women's lacrosse programs, Mulligan was responsible for writing and editing media guides in addition to writing game recaps, news releases, game notes, game programs and feature stories. She also coordinated media interviews between student-athletes, coaches and staff in response to requests from the local and national media.
Mulligan also assisted with the media relations efforts for the Cavalier football team and served as the editor of the game day program.
Mulligan joined the UVA staff after two years as an assistant director of athletic communications at St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. While at St. John's, she worked with the women's basketball team alongside Barnes Arico. Before joining the Red Storm, she was an assistant media relations director at her alma mater, the University of Maryland, for two years.
She was the media contact for the Terrapin volleyball, men's and women's track and field and softball programs while assisting with the publicity efforts for the men's basketball program, including serving as the editor for the game day program.
Prior to her work in public relations, Mulligan worked at both WRC-TV NBC 4 in Washington, D.C., and the Capital-Gazette Newspaper in Annapolis, Md. Mulligan is a 2003 graduate of Maryland, where she earned a bachelor of arts in journalism with a minor in government and politics.Â
