Layne Phillips joined the University of Michigan Olympic Strength and Conditioning staff as a Strength and Conditioning Fellow in July of 2023. In February 2024, Phillips was promoted to Strength and Conditioning Coach and is currently responsible for the program design and implementation for Men's and Women's Track & Field and Men's and Women's Cross Country.
Prior to joining the Michigan staff, Phillips was a Graduate Assistant Coach at Boston College working with Men's Tennis, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, and Men's and Women's Cross Country (2022-23). In addition to his direct team responsibilities, he also assisted with training implementation for Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Ice Hockey and Women's Lacrosse.
Prior to becoming a Graduate Assistant, he completed a Strength and Conditioning internship with Oklahoma State Football.
In 2026, Phillips was awarded the Gatorade CSCCa Young Achievement Award, which is an award for a full-time SCCC Certified Coach who is up-and-coming in the field but has proven their dedication to improving athletic performance with safe and effective science-based programs.
Phillips is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association and by USA Weightlifting as a Level 1 Weightlifting Coach. Phillips is a Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association. Phillips is also a member of the African American Performance Coaches Association.
Originally from McLoud, Okla., Phillips currently currently resides in Ypsilanti, Mich., with his wife, Abigail.
