Scott Vetere was named assistant coach for the University of Michigan women's gymnastics program on July 28, 2017.
In his first season at U-M, he has helped the Wolverines claim both the Big Ten regular season and meet championships. U-M had seven All-Big Ten selections in his first season as he received NCAA Northeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.
Vetere was previously a coach and a student-athlete at U-M. He graduated in 2003 from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts with an individual concentration degree and was a member of the men's gymnastics team. He also served as an assistant coach for the men's gymnastics team for five seasons (2005-09).
In his five seasons on the U-M men's gymnastics staff, Vetere coached six NCAA champions, 55 All-Americans, 16 Big Ten champions, four U.S. National Team members, two Irish National Team members, two World Championship competitors and one Olympian. During his time with the men's team he was responsible for recruiting operations, bringing most notably two-time Olympian and three-time NCAA all-around champion Sam Mikulak to Michigan.
A 10-time NCAA All-American, Vetere was a member of the 1999 national championship team, and the Wolverines won two straight Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000. He was the 2000 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, a six-time Big Ten champion and three-year captain. In 2000 he was co-recipient of the U-M Male Athlete of the Year award.
Also a six-time member of the U.S. National Team, Vetere competed at the World Championship Team Trials in 1999 and was an alternate for the 2000 Olympic Trials.
A native of Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, Vetere also had a history with the women's program at Michigan, serving on the master staff at the team's summer camps for six years. He also served as a member of the U.S. National Team staff from 2007-09.
Vetere came to Michigan from the public accounting firm KPMG, where he was an experienced hire recruiter. He is joined at Michigan by his wife, Amanda, and three daughters, Bella, Gabby and Lucie.
