Scott Sherman completed his 29th season with the women's gymnastics program in 2025. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach on Sept. 17, 2019 after 23 years as an assistant coach. His primary responsibilities include coaching vault, uneven bars, coordinating schedules and assisting in recruiting efforts. During his tenure, Sherman has helped Michigan to the programs first-ever national title in 2021 as well as 21 Big Ten Championships titles, eight Big Ten regular season titles, 13 NCAA Regional titles, 21 NCAA Championships appearances and seven NCAA Super Six berths.
Sherman is widely considered to be one of the nation's most respected coaches on uneven bars. He is a three-time NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year (1999, 2008, 2021) and is an nine-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year (1997, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023).
In 2023, Sherman helped lead Michigan to its 27th Big Ten title as it tied its uneven bars record of 49.725 at the championship event. Sherman's uneven bars squad ranked within the top five for the entirety of the 2023 campaign, while her helped the vault team to a top-three ranking on three occasions. Michigan surpassed the 198+ mark on six occasions in the 2023 season, including once at Crisler Center against No. 1 Oklahoma. In 2024, Sherman's bar squad ranked as high as No. 8 nationally, while he also helped the vault team to a No. 13 ranking. During the 2025 campaign, Sherman led Carly Bauman to a regional championship on the unenver bars, while the team ranked in the top 20 nationally in all four events. Furthermore, Sophia Diaz competed on the vault at the national championship as a freshman in the 2025 season.
Following up the national championship season, the Wolverines topped the national rankings for nine straight weeks to start the 2022 season and continued to set a new standard for Michigan gymnastics. The Wolverines set a program record with a 198.525 at Rutgers, which at the time ranked as the sixth-highest score in NCAA history. In the same meet, U-M set a program record on the vault with a 49.875, the second highest in NCAA history at the time, which included three straight perfect 10.0s. Sherman led the Wolverines on the uneven bars to the second-highest season average in program history (49.418) in the 2022 season, while helping Michigan to the highest team average (197.696) in program history.
In 2021, Sherman helped lead the Wolverines to a U-M record on the uneven bars as they scored a 49.725 at the NCAA Regional Finals. Sherman also helped Michigan to break the 198.000 on four occasions, including a program-record 198.2500 at the national championship.
Individually, Sherman has coached two gymnasts to national championships: Elise Ray in 2004 (uneven bars) and Kylee Botterman in 2011 (all-around). At the Big Ten level, he has coached the Big Ten uneven bars champion in 13 of his 23 seasons, including four of the past six seasons (Joanna Sampson in 2014; Nicole Artz in 2015, Brianna Brown in 2016 and 2018). In addition, Sherman has coached 36 of the team's 42 NCAA All-Americans on uneven bars, including 11 in the past eight seasons.
Prior to his arrival at Michigan, Sherman was an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota and a club gymnastics coach for the Olympic Gymnastics Academy and Twin City Twisters.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sherman earned his B.S. in real estate and economics in 1986 from St. Cloud State University. He and his wife Shannon reside in Ann Arbor with their four children.
