Ben Smith was a key member of the Michigan 1942 and 1943 Big Ten championship golf teams. As the 1943 team captain, Smith shared the Big Ten individual championship after finishing second in 1942 and third his sophomore year. The two-time Florida State High School individual champion was also the Michigan State Amateur champion in 1950. He won the 1948, 1949 and 1951 Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Championship. Smith was the president of the National Intercollegiate Golf Association in 1943. He worked closely with "Chick" Evans in his caddy scholarship program, known today as the Evans Scholarship Foundation of the Western Golf Association.
