As a standout on the Michigan men's gymnastics team from 1956-58, Gagnier placed second at the NCAA Championships in 1956 on the parallel bars and in the all-around competition. Later that year, he was selected as Canada's sole gymnast at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. In 1957, Gagnier tied for the all-around championship at the Big Ten Championships. Gagnier went to Iowa State University where he founded the gymnastics program and established a powerhouse. Three times he was selected as National Coach of the Year. His 1971, 1973 and 1974 teams won NCAA championships.
