Twins Ross and Bob Hume hailed from Canonburg, Pennsylvania, and they were inseparable in every way, including the finish line. After spending the 1940-41 academic year at a Pittsburgh prep school, the brothers arrived in Ann Arbor in the fall of 1941. Immediately part of the freshman track team, they easily made the varsity as soon as they became eligible in 1942. At first the two ran separate events, but by the 1944 season, the two were running together...all the way. It soon became practice for the brothers to come across the finish line holding hands so as to create a tie. At the 1944 outdoor championship in Champaign, they did so in the mile race, while Ross also won the two mile, and Bob finished second at 880 yards and third in the two mile. The pair repeated their feat at the 1944 NCAA championship, coming across together in the one mile race in 4:16.6. They finished ahead of their closest competition by more than 100 yards. Â In total, the twins tied for the top spot 11 times in their careers, including the 1945 Big Ten indoor arid outdoor mile races. They separately collected the title at the 1945 NCAA meet, Ross in the 800-meter race and Bob in the 1,500-meter race. In the six Big Ten Track Championships the brothers participated in, Michigan won five of them. Both graduated from the U-M in 1945 and attended Medical School at Michigan. Bob became a doctor in 1948, eventually settling in Kalamazoo and practicing there, while Ross also joined the medical profession.
