Soccer Overpowers Michigan State in 4-0 Win

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team closed out Big Ten Conference regular-season play with a 4-0 shutout over intrastate rival Michigan State on Friday (Oct 16). U-M finishes with a 5-3-1 conference record, earning the Wolverines a spot in the eight-team Big Ten Tournament, to be held Nov. 6-8 in State College, Pa.
Jessica Limauro (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) opened the scoring at 23:42 off an assist from Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS). Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) notched her second goal of the year on a feed from Jen Stahl (Amston, Conn./Rham HS) with just two minutes left in the opening period, and the Wolverines led 2-0 at halftime.
Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich/Athens HS) opened up the second-half scoring with an unassisted goal, and Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) collected her second collegiate goal in the 87th minute on an assist from Limauro to round out the scoring.
Goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) made six saves for her second shutout of the year and the Wolverines' third shutout in the last four contests.
Michigan will close the regular season with three non-conference home games, starting with a big test against No. 2 Notre Dame at 4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 23) at the Michigan Soccer Field.
