EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore Tamra Geryk's (Hatfield, Mass./Williston Northampton HS) unassisted goal with just 26 seconds left in the game gave the University of Michigan field hockey team a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 18). The 11th-ranked Wolverines improve to 12-3 overall and remain in first place in the Big Ten Conference with a 5-1 league mark. The 15th-ranked Spartans fall to 7-8 and 3-3.
After a scoreless first half which saw both teams record just four shots each, MSU jumped on top 10 minutes into the second half as Marleen Tuip scored with 25:17 to play. However, that was the only shot of the second half for the Spartans as the Wolverines held MSU without a shot the rest of the way.
In her first game back after missing two contests with a knee injury, senior Amy Philbrook (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead HS), tied the game with 13:13 remaining, assisted by freshman Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster HS) and sophomore Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS). The goal was Philbrook's ninth of the season, putting her one behind Gannon for the team lead.
With the clock winding down, Geryk beat MSU goalie Amy Ortwein for the game-winner with 0:26 to play. It was Geryk's eighth tally of the year and her second game-winning goal.
Michigan goalkeeper Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) made three saves for the win as the Wolverines outshot the Spartans 13-5, including 9-1 after intermission.
The Wolverines return to action on Friday (Oct. 23) as they travel to State College, Pa., to meet fifth-ranked Penn State in a 7 p.m. match. The Nittany Lions, who beat Michigan 4-2 in Ann Arbor on Oct. 11, lost 4-2 at unranked Iowa on Friday (Oct. 16) to fall to 4-2 in the Big Ten, a game behind the Wolverines.
With the victory, the Wolverines swept the season series and took a 21-20-6 lead in the all-time series with Michigan State. U-M has won the last three games in the series, and five of the last six meetings have been decided by one-goal margins, including Michigan's 2-1 overtime win on Sept. 24 in Ann Arbor.
This was the first meeting between the two schools when each was ranked in the top 15 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.
This was Michigan's third straight game against a ranked Big Ten opponent. The Wolverines defeated No. 8 Ohio State 1-0 on Oct. 9 and lost 4-2 to No. 6 Penn State on Oct. 11 in their previous two matches.
Michigan State survived a five-minute stretch shorthanded in the second half when Marleen Tuip was sent off for a yellow card.
