BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- One night after its first conference win of the season, the University of Michigan volleyball team dropped a three-game match at Indiana (9-15, 12-15, 14-16) on Saturday (Oct. 3).
Michigan was either tied or ahead late in each of the three games but failed to put the Hoosiers away each time it had a chance. Just as Michigan's strong play at the net was the key to victory over Northwestern, it was that phase of the match that proved to be the Wolverines' downfall as Michigan hit just .182 (to Indiana's .285) and recorded just two total blocks (to IU's 11.5).
Sophomore Joanna Fielder (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) delivered a strong performance with a hitting percentage of .667 (6-0-9) and Shannon Melka (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis HS) recorded 20 assists and three service aces to lead the Wolverines.
Michigan returns home for a pair of Big Ten matches against top-25 teams this coming week, hosting Michigan State on Wednesday (Oct. 7) and Minnesota on Friday (Oct. 9) in Cliff Keen Arena.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Greg Giovanazzi
On the play of Annie Maxwell ... "Annie came in and really gave us a spark, particularly in game three."
On the match overall ... "I thought overall we played good, high-energy volleyball. Tonight was one of those matches when you to give credit to other team. They ran a good offense and distributed the ball real well. We got some good play off the bench from players like Sarah Behnke and Annie Maxwell. Game one was tied at nine, we led game two 12-10 and game three was 13-13, so we were right there all night. However, we could not get over the hump."
