Three individuals earned spots on the 1998 Astro-Turf/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad: juniors Ashley Reichenbach (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS) and Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) and sophomore Jocelyn LaFace (Rossland, B.C./Rossland Secondary). Honorees must be varsity starters with cumulative grade point averages of 3.30 or better.
Additionally, five individuals were named to the Astro-Turf West Region All-American team. Senior co-captains Loveita Wilkinson (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) and Amy Philbrook (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead HS) were named to the first team along with junior defender Ashley Reichenbach and sophomore forward Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS). Junior defender Erica Widder (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) earned a spot on the second team. For Wilkinson, it was the second consecutive time she was selected as a first teamer, while Gannon was on the second team last season.
The Regional All-Americans are now eligible for All-America honors, which will be announced following the NCAA Tournament.
Gannon, Philbrook and Wilkinson were the heart of the Michigan offense as the three combined for 29 goals and 68 points -- 57 percent of the team's goals and 47 percent of the total offense.
Reichenbach and Widder were the anchors of the top defense in the Big Ten, which allowed just 1.13 goals per game, third-best in school history.
The five selections to the West Region All-American squad were the most of any Big Ten team (Penn State is in the East Region).
