Michigan Grapplers Open Season at Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team opened its 1998-99 season with 10 wrestlers placing at the 1998 Michigan State Open held at Jenison Fieldhouse this weekend.
Four Wolverines reached the finals, with Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) and Corey Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) claiming individual titles at 174 and 149 pounds, respectively. Olson also was named the Michigan State Open Most Outstanding Wrestler as he defeated Mark Bybee (Northwestern) and Nick Mengerink (Pittsburgh), ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, by Intermat Wrestle Magazine.
Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) and Andy Hrovat (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) finished as runners-up at 133 and 184 pounds, respectively.
Chris Viola (125) (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS), Frank Lodeserto (197) (North Haledon, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS) and Matt Brink (HWT) (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) finished in third place.
Other Wolverine placers were Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS), Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward HS) and Kyle Smith (Butte, Mont./Butte HS), finishing in fourth, fifth and seventh place, respectively.
