ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team started the 1998 campaign on a perfect note on Tuesday (Sept. 1) as the Wolverines played stifling defense and beat Ball State University 2-0 at Ocker Field. The Cardinals were unable to register even a single shot in the first half as Michigan dictated play, controlling the ball in the offensive zone for the majority of the half.
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) led the way for the Maize and Blue, chalking up seven shots and scoring a goal. Amy Philbrook (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) also turned in an outstanding performance with six shots and a goal. Goalie Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) had some great saves in the second half as Ball State put the pressure on the U-M defenders.
In the second half, the Cardinals were able to put some pressure on and register six shots, but none crossed the goal line. At one point, BSU was awarded four straight penalty corner plays, but Michigan was up to the challenge.
"This was a great win for us," Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz said. "Hopefully this will help us down the stretch because we really played well against a very good team. We played great defense, and if it weren't for the play of their goalie, the score could have been even more one-sided. She played a great game."
