Michigan Defeats Illinois, Falls to Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team claimed second place in a tri-meet with No. 4 Ohio State and No. 7 Illinois on Friday night (Jan. 29) in front of 795 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. Ohio State pulled ahead of Michigan in the last rotation with a final team score of 228.325, followed by the Wolverines (227.550) and the Fighting Illini (222.950). Michigan is now 6-3 on the season, 4-3 against Big Ten Conference competition.
The Wolverines were led by LaLo Haro (Puebla, Pue., Mexico/Instituto Iberia), who finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 56.000. Haro's 9.700 on the floor exercise tied a career high and was good for second place in the meet. He also placed fifth on the parallel bars with a 9.650.
Sophomore Kenny Keener (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville HS) won the still rings with a score of 9.700, while sophomore Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) took the parallel bars competition with a 9.825.
But Michigan's strongest event was the pommel horse, where the team grabbed the top three spots and four of the top five. Freshman Josh Levin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West HS) recorded the high score (9.800), followed by Toman (9.700) and freshman Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) with a 9.650. Tim Dehr (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) captured fifth with a 9.550.
The Wolverines return to action on Friday (Feb. 5) when they travel to No. 1 Penn State for a 7 p.m. dual meet.
