EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team improved its record to 13-4 (6-1 Big Ten) with a convincing 5-1 defeat of Northwestern Friday (Oct. 22). The eighth-ranked Wolverines were in control of the entire game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and scoring all three second-half goals.
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) paced the Wolverines, scoring the first two goals of the contest. Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) assisted on both of Gannon's goals and Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) added an assist on the second.
Northwestern (4-11, 0-8 Big Ten) closed the gap to 2-1 midway through the first half but would get no closer as Michigan was dominant in the second period.
Ashley Reichenbach (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS) opened the second-half scoring on a penalty stroke to earn her fourth goal of the season. Jocelyn LaFace (Rossland, B.C./Rossland Secondary) closed the scoring with her first two goals of the season. Adding an assist on LaFace's first goal was Regan Wulfsberg (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS).
The win gave the Maize and Blue a season sweep over the Wildcats and six consecutive victories in the series.
Michigan is tied with Iowa atop the Big Ten Conference standings with three games left on its schedule. Michigan and Iowa will meet Sunday (Oct. 24) at 1 p.m. CDT in a critical Big Ten matchup. The Maize and Blue took the last meeting (Oct. 8) by a 1-0 count.
