Second-Half Burst Leads Michigan Past Michigan State
10/8/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
After playing to a scoreless tie through the first half, the Wolverines (9-3-1, 6-0-1 Big Ten) put three goals on the board in a 11:01 span to blow the game open. Goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) recorded her 26th career victory, tying the school record established by Jessica Jones (1995-98).
Junior Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) opened the scoring at 58:05. Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) carried the play down the left wing and hooked a high shot into the box. The Spartan goalkeeper deflected the shot to Beitel all alone in front of the net and Beitel drilled it home for her sixth goal of the season. The assist, Berendowsky's 30th, moved her within one of the Big Ten career record held by Penn State's Rachel Hoffman (1994-97).
The Wolverines wasted no time getting goal number two as Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) scored a mere 1:08 later. Again Berendowsky started the play, sending a ball deep down the left seam. Schmitt won back the loose ball and blasted a shot from 20 yards out on the wing into the far corner for her third goal of the season.
Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) made the score 3-0 at 69:06. Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) won back a clearing attempt in the offensive zone, dribbled forward and slid a pass to Spaccarotella cutting to the upper right corner of the box. Spaccarotella ran onto the pass and blasted a 15-yard shot over the goalie's head for her fifth goal of the season.
Michigan State (4-6-3, 3-3-1 Big Ten) closed the scoring in the 87th minute when Meghan Kolbe's shot hit off the post and dribbled across the goal line.
Neither team could manage much offense in the first half as a solid rainfall rendered the field extremely slick and the ball nearly impossible to control. Still, Michigan State managed the first opportunity of the game when, on a free kick from 45 yards away, Ann Cieszkowski squarely hit the crossbar. Later in the half, Michigan created four good scoring opportunities, the best coming with 2:25 remaining in the opening period when Abby Crumpton's (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) attempt beat the keeper but slid wide.
The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (Oct. 10) when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern at 1 p.m. CDT.
