Georgia Defeats U-M, Hands Wolverines First Loss

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 175-125 to seventh-ranked Georgia on Friday (Nov. 5) at Canham Natatorium. The Bulldogs won three of the first four events before U-M rallied back to win the next two events. But Georgia stopped the Wolverines' rally, winning the next four events to pull away and take the win.

Junior All-American Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) had two first-place finishes for the Wolverines. Thompson's first victory was in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing in 8:00.55. Thompson also led a U-M 1-2-3 finish in the 400-meter free as sophomore Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) and team tri-captain Mike McWha (Windsor, Ontario/Kennedy Collegiate Institute) finished second and third, respectively.

Junior All-American Scott Werner (Haymarket Va./Paul VI HS) also had two first-place finishes for the Wolverines, winning the 100-meter breaststroke (1.02.46) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:14.76). In the 400-meter individual medley, Siciliano placed first, finishing in 4:21.21.

U-M freshman Paul Ely (Beaverton,Ore./Sunset HS) pulled off the closest finish of the day, finishing at 2:02.02 -- just 0.06 seconds ahead of Georgia's Beau Wiebel -- in the 200-meter fly.

The next meet for coach Jon Urbanchek's Wolverines is at Penn State on Friday, Nov. 12.
