ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics squad, which finished 1999 as national runners-up, opened up its 1999-2000 campaign with its annual Maize and Blue intrasquad scrimmage. The Maize team defeated the Blue team 183.100-182.600, although senior co-captain Sarah Cain (Grand Island, Neb./Grand Island HS), competing for the Blue team, posted the top scores on the uneven bars (9.850), floor exercise (9.850) and all-around (39.300).
Cain paced the Blue team to a lead after the first two rotations with a 9.775 on the vault and a 9.850 on the uneven bars, the event she placed runner-up on at the 1999 NCAA Championships. The Maize team, which trailed 87.025-86.750 following two rotations, was paced on the vault by freshman Janessa Grieco (Mahopac, N.Y./Carmel HS), who registered a meet-best 9.800. Co-captain Bridget Knaeble (New Hope, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) helped the Maize team's cause with a 9.750 on the uneven bars.
Cain continued to perform well with a meet-high 9.850 on the floor exercise while her Blue teammate Karina Senior (Markham, Ontario/Milliken Mills HS) posted a mark of 9.800. Sophomore Jodie Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) paced the Maize on the floor exercise with a 9.775.
Despite Cain's efforts, the Maize squad came up big on the balance beam to pull out the win. Knaeble recorded the best score of the night on any event with a 9.900 on the beam to lead the Maize. Grieco also helped the Maize's cause with a score of 9.850. Once again, Cain led the Blue squad with a 9.825, which also helped her claim the all-around title with a mark of 39.300.
The Wolverines will open the 1999-2000 regular season with a trip to Athens, Ga., for the Super Six Challenge with Georgia, Alabama, UCLA, Florida and Nebraska on Jan. 8.
