Wolverines Dominate Western Michigan 6-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team dominated in-state rival Western Michigan 6-1 on Saturday (Feb. 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The victory raised the Wolverines' record to 4-1 on the season, while the Broncos fell to 2-4 on the year.
Michigan jumped out to a 1-0 advantage by sweeping all three doubles matches. Junior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) ensured the sweep with a tight 8-6 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot.
The Wolverines No. 2 doubles tandem of senior co-captain William Farah (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and junior Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) defeated Western Michigan's Mohamed Dakki and Jeff Brink (8-3) for their team-leading seventh victory together (7-3). Junior John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and senior co-captain Jake Raiton (Portland, Ore./Wilson HS) dominated at the No. 3 spot, posting an 8-2 victory over Demian Pons and Kyle Gernhofer.
In singles, Michigan put the match away with victories in five of the six matches. Wright (No. 1 spot) and McCain (No. 4) posted their 10th victories of the season, while freshman Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) remained undefeated (5-0) in dual match competition.
Freshman Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) continued his team lead in victories, beating Western Michigan's Jeff Brink (6-4, 6-4) for his 13th win of the season (13-7). The team's other victory came from Long, who collected a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-1) over Western Michigan's Fernando Garcia at the No. 3 spot.
The Wolverines will not compete again for 15 days. Michigan's next match is Sunday, Feb. 28, against Boise State at the Varsity Tennis Center (1 p.m.).
