ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated Boise State 6-1 at the Varsity Tennis Center Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28), remaining unbeaten in four matches at home this season. The Wolverines improved to 5-1 on the year, while Boise State dropped to 3-7.
The Wolverines gained a 1-0 advantage in the match by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Senior co-captain William Farah (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and junior Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) won a close 9-7 match against Cory Dalos and Ryan Thompson at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The victory was the pairing's team-leading eighth together (8-3 record) and fourth dual match win (4-1).
Junior John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and senior co-captain Jake Raiton (Portland, Ore./Wilson HS) remained unbeaten in dual competition, posting the team's other doubles victory with an 8-6 win over Boise State's Andrew Roumieh and Ronald Rugimbana. The duo is 4-0 in dual matches and 6-2 overall this season.
Michigan won five of the six singles matches to put the match away. The Wolverines' only setback came as junior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) dropped a straight-sets match to Leif Meineke at the No. 1 spot.
Farah posted a hard-fought, three-set victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Wesley Moodie (7-6, 2-6, 6-3). The victory was Farah's 12th of the season and 89th of his career, snapping a tie for sixth all-time on Michigan's career singles list.
Long, freshman Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) and freshman Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) claimed straight-sets wins at the middle spots in the lineup, while freshman Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) remained unbeaten with a three-set victory at the No. 6 spot.
The Wolverines will depart for a week trip in California. Michigan will play San Diego on Wednesday, March 3, at 1 p.m. PST before focusing strictly on doubles competition as they participate in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament (March 4-7) in La Jolla, Calif.
