COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Ohio State but was unable to secure victory, losing 4-3 to the Buckeyes at the Jesse Owens Recreation Center today. Michigan dropped to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in Big Ten play, while Ohio State improved to 6-3 by winning its Big Ten opener.
The loss ended a streak of 11 consecutive Michigan victories over the Buckeyes, dating back to the Big Ten Championships in 1988-89.
The Wolverines started the match strong, winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Junior co-captains Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS), ranked 32nd nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, upset Ohio State's 12th-ranked Briana Harris and Kristy Dascoli in a tie-breaker (9-8 score, 9-7 in tie-breaker) at the No. 1 spot.
Senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) and sophomore Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) claimed the team's other doubles victory, defeating Michelle Matko and Monica Rincon by an 8-6 score at the No. 2 spot. The victory was their first in five doubles matches together.
Holding a 1-0 advantage heading into the six singles matches, the Wolverines could manage only two victories and lost the match by a 4-3 score. Michigan's wins came as Fuzesi defeated OSU's Harris (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 3 slot, while Boylan claimed victory over Rincon (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 4 spot.
Michigan will conclude its weekend road trip with a match Sunday (Feb. 28) against Penn State at 1 p.m. The Wolverines will look to win their ninth straight match against the Lady Lions and 11th all-time (10-2 record in the all-time series).
