STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won a close 4-3 match against Penn State at the Sarni Tennis Center Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28). The Wolverines won their ninth straight against the Lady Lions and improved to 3-3 on the year (2-1 in Big Ten play), while Penn State dropped to 1-4 in dual competition.
Michigan won matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Junior co-captains Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) posted a 9-7 victory over Rebecca Ho and Martina Kopacova at the No. 1 slot. Sophomore Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./George Jenkins HS) secured the doubles point with a victory over Kelley Margolis and Kate Ovelman in a tie-breaker (9-8 match score, 7-5 in tie-breaker).
Michigan split the six singles matches to hold on for the 4-3 match win. Lund defeated Jan Perez in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) at No. 2 singles for her team-leading 10th win of the year. Sophomore Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) came from a set down to clinch the match at the No. 3 spot, defeating Penn State's Martina Kopacova in three sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-3). Sophomore walk-on Maya Canfield (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) contributed to the win with a straight-sets victory over Kate Ovelman at the No. 6 spot.
The Wolverines will host two top 10 national programs next weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center, playing No. 2 Duke on Saturday, March 6 (1 p.m.) and No. 9 Wake Forest on Sunday, March 7 (11 a.m.).
