Michigan Netters Lose 5-2 at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Head coach Bitsy Ritt and the University of Michigan women's tennis team lost a tough 5-2 match to Minnesota Friday (April 16) at the 98th Street Tennis Center. The Wolverines fell to 4-14 overall this season (3-5 Big Ten), while the Golden Gophers improved to 12-5 (5-2 in conference).
Minnesota volleyed to a 1-0 lead in the match, sweeping all three doubles matches. The Golden Gophers would carry the momentum into singles, winning four of the six contests for their 12th victory in the 22-match series between the programs.
Michigan's two match points came at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles slots. Sophomore Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) collected a straight-set victory over Tarah Elkins (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 4 spot, while freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) posted a hard-fought, three-set win over Jana Hrdinova in a final set tie-breaker (6-2, 3-6, 7-6).
The women's tennis squad completes the regular season with a pair of Big Ten road matches next weekend. Michigan plays at Illinois (Saturday, April 24, at 11 a.m. CDT) and Northwestern (Sunday, April 25, at 10 a.m. CDT).
