CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at Illinois Saturday (April 24). The match was more closely contested than the score would indicate as seven singles and one doubles set finished with a score of 6-4 or closer. Illinois won seven of those eight sets. The loss dropped Michigan's record to 3-6 in the Big Ten and 4-15 overall, while Illinois improved to 6-3 in conference and 11-9 overall.
Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) dropped a pair of tight matches. Lund and doubles partner Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) fell 8-6 at the first doubles slot. Lund then battled Stacy Schapiro in a three-set marathon match, winning the first set 6-3 before being edged out by Schapiro 5-7, 5-7 in the last two sets. Boylan lost her singles match, starting out slowly in the first set, 2-6, before falling in a second-set tie-breaker 6-7.
At No. 1 singles, Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) competed hard but fell in three sets. Hart won the second set 6-4, but dropped the first and third sets by 5-7 counts.
The Wolverines close out the regular season on Sunday (April 25) when they travel to Northwestern for a 10 a.m. CDT start. The Big Ten Tournament begins next week (April 29-May 2) in East Lansing, Mich.
