EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team's bid for a third straight conference finals appearance came to an abrupt end as the Wolverines lost 4-2 to Purdue Thursday (April 29) in first-round action at the 1999 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship held at the MSU Tennis Facility. The Wolverines completed the season with a 4-17 overall record and a 3-7 mark in the conference.
Michigan, the No. 9 seed in the tourney, and Purdue, seeded eighth, fought to the final shot for the doubles point, with the Boilermakers clinching the team point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. U-M sophomores Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) posted an 8-3 victory over Erika Quebe and Lisa Walgenbach at the No. 3 spot.
With Purdue's Jennifer Embry and Elizabeth Wright beating senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) and junior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) by an 8-5 score, the doubles point would be decided at the No. 2 spot. The Boilermakers' Shannon Taheny and Lynsey Fick outlasted junior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS), winning the match by a 9-8 score in a tie-breaker (7-3 score in tie-breaker).
Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Wolverines were unable to come back in singles and lost 4-2. Michigan's wins came at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles slots, with Lund and Sinclair claiming the victories. Lund defeated Erika Quebe in commanding fashion (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 2 spot, while Sinclair beat Lynsey Fick handily (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 6 slot.
