Women's Tennis Falls 5-4 to No. 27 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team nearly upset No. 27 North Carolina Monday evening (April 5), falling 5-4 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Wolverines dropped to 4-11 on the season, while the Tar Heels improved to 12-6.
Michigan and North Carolina split the six singles matches to start the contest, with the Wolverines claiming victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 spots. All three Michigan wins were taken to three sets.
Junior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) won her second straight match, beating Caroline Hill in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 7-6) at the No. 2 spot. Hart came from behind for her ninth victory of the season (9-13) and fifth dual match win (5-10).
Sophomore Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) ended an eight-match losing streak with her win at the No. 3 spot. Fuzesi defeated Sarah Hawkins (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) after dropping the first set. The victory moved Fuzesi's record to 6-12 overall since transferring in January and her dual match mark to 5-10.
The Wolverines final singles victory came as sophomore Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) won her 10th singles match of the season. Sinclair defeated Jeni Burnette (6-2, 2-6, 7-5) at the No. 6 slot to move closer to the .500 mark (10-12 overall and 6-8 in dual matches).
With the match tied at 3-3, North Carolina won the match with victories in two of the three doubles matches. Jessica Zaganzyck and Cena Hackler defeated Hart and freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) by an 8-5 score at the No. 1 spot, while Hawkins and Hill beat U-M's Fuzesi and Sinclair 9-7 at the No. 3 slot. Michigan's victory came as junior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) and Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) defeated Emi Shaffer and Courtney Zalinski by an 8-5 score at the No. 2 spot.
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor for a pair of home matches against Indiana (Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m.) and Purdue (Sunday, April 11, at 11 a.m.). These contests begin the stretch run of the Big Ten regular season as Michigan plays five consecutive conference matches prior to the Big Ten Championships.
