MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Team captain Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) is pacing the University of Michigan men's golf squad at the 1999 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships after the first two rounds of competition Friday (May 14). The Wolverines stand in eighth place (290-293/583) halfway through the competition.
Harris carded under-par rounds of 69 and 70 (139 total) at the par-71 Les Bolstad Golf Course and stands just two strokes off the lead held by Illinois' Larry Nuger and Iowa's Matt Stutzman. Harris is bidding to become the first Wolverine to win the individual Big Ten title since Kyle Dobbs won the title in 1997.
Northwestern leads second-place Minnesota by one stroke with a two-round total of 565. The middle of the pack is tightly bunched, with just seven strokes separating third place (576) from eighth.
Other Wolverines participating in the tournament include freshman Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS), junior Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Hills HS), Brian Seipke (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City HS) and Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS).
Action will resume Saturday (May 15) with the third round, followed by the final 18 holes on Sunday.
