MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Team captain Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) became the University of Michigan's 15th conference medalist as he tied for first place with Illinois' Larry Nuger at the Big Ten Men's Golf Championships, hosted by the University of Minnesota Friday through Sunday (May 14-16).
Harris' performance helped carry the Wolverines to a sixth-place team finish. Northwestern edged host Minnesota for the team championship with a final tally of 1131, just three strokes ahead of the Golden Gophers.
Harris carded an even-par score of 71 in the final round to finish with a 72-hole total of 278 (69-70-68-71). Harris, who shot even par or better in all four rounds en route to his six-under-par total, is U-M's first medalist since Kyle Dobbs in 1997, and only the second since John Morse won in 1980.
"I was pleased with the way I rallied from a poor start," said Harris, who was three-over par on the front nine Sunday after starting the day with a one-stroke lead over Nuger.
Led by Andy Matthews' (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) final-round 68, Michigan tallied a two-under-par 282 total on Sunday, matching the second-best team round of the day and the fifth-best 18-hole score of the tournament. Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Hills HS) and Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) added scores of 71 and 72, respectively, on Sunday. Brian Seipke (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City HS) was the other Maize and Blue representative in Minneapolis.
Harris was named to the five-member All-Championships team and earned one of 10 spots on the All-Big Ten squad. Matthews was named the conference Freshman of the Year.
