Jillson, Comrie Selected in 1999 NHL Entry Draft

BOSTON, Mass. -- Two University of Michigan ice hockey players were chosen Saturday (June 26) in the 1999 National Hockey League's Entry Draft, led by first-round pick Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.). Jillson was selected by the San Jose Sharks as the 14th pick in the first round, while Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers as the 25th selection (91st overall) in the third round.
Jillson, a 6-3, 220-pound defenseman, was ranked by the Central Scouting Service as the 14th pick overall entering the draft. Last season, as a freshman for the Wolverines, Jillson led the team in plus-minus rating with a plus-22 mark. He was second among defensemen and fifth overall on the team in scoring, with five goals and 19 assists for 24 point in 38 games.

Last winter, Jillson played for the US National Team at the 1999 World Junior Championship in Winnipeg. He was twice selected as the CCHA Rookie of the Week and earned a spot on the CCHA All-Rookie Team.
Comrie, a 5-10, 172-pound forward, led the Wolverines in scoring during his freshman campaign last season, with 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points in 42 games, on his way to being name the CCHA Rookie of the Year. He was selected as the CCHA Rookie of the Week three times and also earned a spot on the CCHA All-Rookie Team.
The Sharks and the Oilers retain the rights of Jillson and Comrie, respectively, while they are still in college.
