MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team opened its season with a 10th-place finish at the 20-team Lady Northern Intercollegiate held Friday through Sunday (Sept. 17-19). In what was a preview of the course that will host the Big Ten Conference Championship in late April, all 11 Big Ten schools and nine non-conference schools participated in the three-day tournament at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course.
Michigan finished the tournament with team rounds of 325-324-317 for a 54-hole tournament total of 966. Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North HS) led the way for the Wolverines, finishing tied for 28th after scores of 78-81-77 for a 236 total. Teammate LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) finished in 36th with her 238 total (82-79-77).
Stephanie MacAdams (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS) finished tied for 58th (85-80-83/248); in her first collegiate tournament Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) finished tied for 63rd (84-84-81/249); Amy Talbot (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) finished tied for 68th (83-86-82/251) and Stephanie Bezilla (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) rounded out the Wolverines' finishes tied for 77th (82-87-88/257).
The Wolverines travel to nearby East Lansing to participate in Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational Sept. 25-26. The tournament will be played at Forest Akers Golf Course.
