EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After a consistent opening tournament last week in Wisconsin, the University of Michigan women's golf team continued with a solid performance at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University Sept. 25-26 at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Wolverines finished 10th out of 18 teams after round scores of 321-322-319 for a three-round total of 962.
After competing in her first collegiate tournament last week, freshman Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS) shook any second-tournament nerves to lead the Wolverines. She finished the tournament tied for 26th after round scores of 78-83-76 for a tournament total of 237.
In her first tournament appearance during the early season, sophomore Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) finished tied for 37th after rounds of 82-77-83 for a 242 total. Fellow sophomore Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North HS) continued her consistent play by finishing tied for 45th after three straight rounds of 81 for a total of 243.
Junior Amy Talbot (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) finished tied for 55th (87-81-79/247); sophomore LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) finished tied for 62nd (81-85-84/250) and junior Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) finished her opening tournament of the season tied for 80th (81-86-89/256).
Michigan's next tournament will be Oct. 9-10 when it hosts the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Golf Course.
